Ukraine Gate – Kiev – February 27,2022- UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu reminded Russia that there are no winners with nuclear weapons, only victims.
An increase in the level of nuclear combat readiness of the Russian Federation only increases the risk of a catastrophic miscalculation. There are no winners with nuclear weapons, our safety, restraint, de-escalation and risk reduction are urgently needed.
Earlier on Sunday, US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told CBS News that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to bring the country’s nuclear deterrent into combat readiness was an escalation of aggression that was “absolutely unacceptable.”
She also said she was “not surprised” that Putin had switched to training Russia’s nuclear forces because he had “tried all possible means to intimidate the world with his actions.”
“It simply means that we must step up our efforts here at the United Nations and elsewhere to bring him to justice,” added Thomas Greenfield.
According to her, Putin must stop his aggressive actions against Ukraine. “And we will continue to use all the levers at our disposal here at the United Nations and around the world to expose his actions,” said Thomas Greenfield.
Putin has reportedly ordered his military leaders to transfer Russia’s nuclear deterrent to a “special combat duty regime”, citing “aggressive statements” by NATO members and large-scale sanctions by the United States and Western leaders against him and Russian financial institutions.
