Speaking on French radio station France Inter on Tuesday, Grandi called the milestone a “terrible” figure.
“Hundreds of thousands of people are on the move, trying to leave the war zone and find refuge primarily in safe areas inside Ukraine. But the safe space is shrinking and people are inevitably trying to cross borders,” he said.
According to Grandi, almost all refugees are women, children and the elderly.
“This is a very specific group of the population. It is important to note that on International Women’s Day, men are at war and women are paying for the consequences, “Grandi continued.
He noted that most refugees have gone to Poland, Moldova and other neighboring countries, adding that most of them go “where they have connections, family.”
“We fear a second wave of people who have far fewer resources and connections, and who will be much more vulnerable,” Grandi warned.
Let’s add
Romania has taken in 281,000 refugees since the start of the war in Ukraine, Romanian border police said on Tuesday, although 208,000 have already left the country.
Border police did not specify where the refugees were heading after leaving Romania.
