It is noted that this plan also outlines a number of measures to respond to rising energy prices in Europe and replenish gas supplies for next winter.
“Europe has been facing rising energy prices for several months, but now supply uncertainties are exacerbating the problem. REPowerEU will seek to diversify gas supplies, speed up renewables and replace gas in heating and electricity. This could reduce EU demand for Russian gas by two-thirds. at the end of the year, “the European Commission said.
It is reported that the gradual cessation of Europe’s dependence on fossil fuels from Russia “may be achieved long before 2030.”
“To this end, the Commission proposes to develop a REPowerEU plan that will increase the resilience of the EU-wide energy system based on two pillars: diversification of gas supplies through increased liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports and pipelines from non-Russian suppliers, and increased production and imports of biomethane and and faster reduction of fossil fuel use in our homes, buildings, industry and energy system by increasing energy efficiency, increasing renewable energy and electrification, and eliminating infrastructure bottlenecks, “the statement said.
With REPowerEU measures, Europe is expected to gradually phase out the use of 155 billion cubic meters of fossil gas, equivalent to imports from Russia in 2021. “Almost two-thirds of this reduction can be achieved within a year, which will put an end to the EU’s excessive dependence on one supplier,” the statement said.
