The World Food Program (WFP) warns that the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine is threatened by acute food shortages in several regions of the world.

Jacob Kern, coordinator of the World Food Emergency Program in Ukraine, says the war has put many people on the brink of starvation. He believes that because Ukraine is a key producer of agricultural products, it also threatens food security around the world, especially in “hot spots”.
Speaking at the WFP regional office in Krakow, Poland, Kern said the agency had mobilized enough food to feed three million people in a month.

“The country’s food supply chain is collapsing. Movement of goods has slowed due to insecurity and reluctance of transporters to deliver goods to places such as the Dnieper, not to mention Mariupol or Sumy… We have prepared bulk food, wheat flour for bakeries and food rations distribution by city administrations, “Kern said.
The Black Sea region is known as the breadbasket of Europe. It is one of the most important areas for the production of grain and other agricultural products, as well as a global hub for grain trade. However, the Russian military did not allow about 300 ships to leave the Black Sea.
He also noted that Egypt imports more than 80% of its wheat from Ukraine, and Lebanon – more than 50%. These and other countries, such as Tunisia, Algeria and Yemen, which depend on Ukrainian wheat, will have to look for other sources, which will lead to further price increases.
