US officials have confirmed that Russia has launched hypersonic missiles against Ukraine, making it the first known use of such missiles in combat.

The launches were likely aimed at testing weapons and sending Western messages about Russia’s capabilities, several sources told CNN.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday that it had launched dagger hypersonic missiles at a military munitions depot in western Ukraine on Friday.
Hypersonic weapons are difficult to detect, which poses problems for missile defense systems. Such missiles can move on a much lower trajectory than high-arc ballistic missiles, which can be easily detected. Hypersonic can also maneuver and evade missile defense systems.
The Pentagon has made the development of hypersonic weapons one of its top priorities as China and Russia work on developing their own versions.
