Ukraine Gate, March 22, 2022- The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine announced that the Russian army launched an attack on five Ukrainian prisons since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, which led to the destruction of the Mariupol and Chernihiv Reserve Centers, in addition to three other prisons in Mariupol, Berdyansk and Kharkiv, as a result of which one of them was slightly injured.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Justice said that they had lost contact with the pre-trial detention centers in Mariupol, Starobilsk and Kherson, as well as the Melitopol and Pryazovska correctional colonies.
In addition, prisons and former detention centers held approximately 48,000 convicts and prisoners.
Although prison system personnel do not take part in hostilities, they have also been affected by the war, and there are currently 33 prisons located in active combat zones, most of which are fully functional facilities facing wartime challenges.
