Poll: 18% of Ukrainians speak only Russian at home

Fewer and fewer Ukrainians speak Russian exclusively at home. This is evidenced by the results of a poll by the sociological group “Rating” .

“We can state a steady decline in the Russian-speaking segment of Ukrainians: in 2012 there were about 40% of such respondents, at the end of 2021 – 26%, and at the beginning of the war – 18%,” – said in a statement.
As noted, Russian-speaking people are increasingly beginning to become “bilingual” (from 15 to 32%).
The number of those who constantly use only Ukrainian at home has increased slightly from 44% to 48%.
Currently, two thirds of those who use two languages at home are ready to switch exclusively to Ukrainian in the near future. Among Russian-speaking – a third.

An absolute majority (83%) in favor of Ukrainian being the only state language in Ukraine. This opinion dominates in all macro-regions, age and language groups.
On the other hand, almost a quarter of those who supported the state status of the Russian language before the war, and today – only 7%.
In peacetime, the inhabitants of the south and east have traditionally advocated granting the status of the state Russian language. But even in these regions there were only a third, and today their number has almost halved.

The poll was conducted on March 19, 2022. Audience: the population of Ukraine over the age of 18 in all oblasts, except for the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas.
A total of 1,000 respondents were interviewed.
Survey method: CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews).
