Ukraine, Ukraine gate- March 27, 2022- GTS Ukraine Operator LLC (OGTSU) proposes that Europe gradually impose an embargo on the use of the Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline.
This was announced by the General Director of OGTSU Serhiy Makogon in an interview with TSN.ua.
“Our proposal for the deputisation of Nord Stream 1 and the deputisation of Europe is a gradual embargo on the pipeline. We understand that Europe cannot give up Russian gas immediately. But it is gradually planning to do so,” Makogon said.
According to him, it is first possible to impose a 50% restriction on transit through Nord Stream-1. Gas supplies to Germany can be continued through the gas transmission systems of Ukraine and Poland.
“Both Yamal and our GTS are capable of transporting an additional 20-30 billion cubic meters of gas, which will actually increase Russia’s dependence on our gas infrastructure. They will understand that if they damage our GTS, they will not be able to export gas to Europe. This is our proposal, and we are currently actively discussing it with our European and American colleagues, “Makogon commented.
He stressed that Europe needs to diversify its gas supplies by transporting “blue fuel” from Africa to Qatar and switching to other energy sources.
As reported, after the Russian war in Ukraine, the German government, which has always supported the Nord Stream-2 project, ordered the Federal Grid Agency to suspend the certification process of the pipeline. Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the pipeline, declared insolvency on March 1.
Nord Stream 1 passes through the Baltic Sea to the German coast. The gas plant, which has been operating since 2012, can pump up to 55 billion cubic meters of gas a year.
