According to US intelligence, “disinformation has created mistrust and increased tensions between Putin and his defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, who was once one of the most trusted members of the Kremlin’s inner circle,” the newspaper said.
According to US officials, Putin’s harsh isolation during the pandemic and his willingness to publicly condemn his advisers have helped him receive incomplete or overly optimistic reports of Russian military progress. And, apparently, he really did not know that the Russian army used conscripts in Ukraine, and they were among the dead.
It is noted that the disclosure of classified information was part of a months-long information warfare campaign waged by President Joe Biden’s administration and US intelligence services to counter Russian propaganda.
The publication itself doubts whether it is true that Putin is not fully informed about the course of hostilities.
According to the representative of the administration, in particular, information about the participation in the war of conscripts and cases of their deaths is hidden from Putin.
It is also reported that they are trying to hide from Putin the extent of damage to Russia’s economy caused by Western sanctions.
