Facebook and Instagram allow the publication of hard-to-perceive and violent content if it is disseminated in order to raise awareness of possible human rights violations. However, the company removes such content if it is extremely outspoken or exalts suffering.
Meta also adds warning labels to some sensitive posts that users must click before they can see the image.
Earlier, human rights groups criticized the company’s approach to removing violent content during conflicts. They said that the practice of clearing data from servers in 90 days leads to the removal of important evidence of war crimes.
Therefore, according to Stone, Meta is exploring ways to preserve this type and other types of content when it is removed. In particular, this applies to the content of the war in Ukraine, he added.
