The US Congress is preparing to pass two bipartisan bills in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the latest move by lawmakers before they begin a two-week recess on Friday.
The House will consider the two bills that just passed the Senate:
• First, stopping normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus, and punishing countries for invasion by paving the way for imposing higher customs duties on imports from them.
• The second, a bill to ban energy imports from Russia, including oil, coal and natural gas.
The Senate unanimously passed both bills this morning.
The Trade Relations Bill is the latest effort by Congress to suppress Russia and aid Ukraine. On Wednesday evening, the Senate passed a bill to provide more rapid military assistance to Ukraine.
Once the House passes Senate bills, they will be sent to US President Joe Biden’s office for signature, according to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s office.
