Foreign Minister Eva Maria Lemets confirmed that Estonia wants to end its dependence on Russian gas “within this year”.
The images of Bucha’s killing of civilians “changed public opinion in our communities and for that reason, we are moving forward quickly with these decisions to end financial flows to Russia,” Limits said.
The foreign minister added that it was “unfortunate” to see the European Union paid 35 billion euros for Russian energy since the start of the war, describing it as “disproportionately large” compared to the financial support provided to Ukraine.
The government said today that it had taken a decision in principle to stop Estonia from importing Russian gas this year.
Earlier today, the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications announced that Estonia and Finland have agreed to jointly lease a floating LNG terminal, ensuring supply to both countries without relying on Russia.
