On April 9, the Pakistani parliament declared a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Imran Khan, dismissing him after 3.5 years as prime minister.
Details
Khan, 69, has been Pakistan’s prime minister since 2018.
He promised to defeat corruption and bring his country out of the economic crisis, but many locals now believe he has not kept his promises.
The no-confidence vote was preceded by a 13-hour meeting with repeated breaks over long speeches by Khan members, who spoke of the alleged US conspiracy to overthrow Pakistan’s prime minister.
On Sunday night, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Ayaz Sadik, announced that opposition parties were able to get 174 votes in the 342-member chamber in support of a no-confidence vote.
“Therefore, the proposal against Prime Minister Imran Khan was approved,” Sadik said to applause in the meeting room.
The Pakistani parliament is expected to convene on Monday, April 11, to elect a new prime minister.
The favorite for the post of the next head of government, 70-year-old Shehbaz Sharif, called Khan’s resignation a chance for a new beginning.
Let’s add
In Pakistan, since gaining independence from Britain in 1947, no prime minister has completed his full term. Khan, who came to power with the support of the military, became the first to be removed from office as a result of a no-confidence vote.
Addition
Khan maintained close ties with the Russian leadership and was in Russia on the day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
