Voting began at 8 a.m. local time and will end at 6:00 p.m., when the first exit poll data will be released.
According to opinion polls, Macron should win an “easy victory” thanks to active diplomacy towards Ukraine, a strong economic recovery and the weakness of the fragmented opposition. However, the late start of the election campaign and the plan to raise the retirement age undermined the president’s ratings, along with a sharp rise in inflation.
Meanwhile, the anti-immigration, Eurosceptic far-right Le Pen has been campaigning confidently, emphasizing the cost of living.
If Macron and Le Pen run in the second round together, the incumbent will face a problem: polls show that left-wing voters will not vote for Macron in the second round just to prevent a far-right candidate from coming to power. So Macron will have to convince them to vote for themselves in the second round.
Sunday’s vote is set to show who will be elected by a majority of the undecided French and whether Le Pen will be able to surpass public opinion polls and take first place in the first round.
Let’s add
According to opinion polls by Ipsos Sopra Steria Cevipof, Macron will win Marin Le Pen in the country’s presidential election, although Le Pen’s position has been strengthening in recent weeks.
