The European Commission has begun work on new sanctions against Russia with the “oil option”, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said before a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on Monday .

“The European Commission has made it very clear that it is starting work on the 6th package with ‘oil options’. This means that work has already begun on reaching a consensus,” Landsbergis said.

The European Union has announced and implemented a fifth package of sanctions against Russia in response to its war against Ukraine, which includes, among other things, an embargo on Russian coal imports and new sanctions on one of Russia’s largest banks, VTB. However, restrictive measures on oil imports, in particular, are still being worked on, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
