Igor Zhovkva, Zelensky’s deputy head of the office, said earlier Monday that he expects Ukraine to receive candidate status in June during a scheduled European Council meeting attended by EU leaders.
“We expect that the recommendation … will be positive, and then the ball will be on the side of the EU member states,” Zhovkva said.
The next EU summit is scheduled for June 23-24, and an extraordinary summit on Russia, energy and defense has already been announced for May 30-31.
But before it is possible to discuss Ukraine’s application for EU membership with the participation of 27 member states, the European Commission must make a recommendation on Ukraine’s compliance with the necessary membership criteria.
As indicated, although the process in Ukraine is expected to be slightly faster than in other EU member states, it is likely to be lengthy. It took Croatia, the last EU member, 10 years to join the bloc.
