This event, which was later called the tragedy of the twentieth century, became the greatest man-made disaster. Then during the explosion at the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant there was a large release of radioactive substances into the environment. The force of the explosion was equal to 500 bombs – those that were once dropped on Hiroshima.
Strong radioactive radiation struck the area within a radius of 30 kilometers from the scene. However, the scale of the accident was much larger. In addition to the Ukrainian settlements affected by the catastrophe, the villages of 19 regions of Russia, where almost 3 million people lived, were exposed to radiation pollution. Radiation has also spread rapidly in some parts of Belarus and reached Europe.
Residents of the surrounding regions learned about the Chernobyl accident only a few days later. The country has begun an active accumulation of forces to eliminate the consequences of the accident. At that time, not only specialized fire brigades but also civilians were sent to put out the fire. During these works, many people received lethal doses of radiation. In the 2000s, the world community joined forces to solve the “Chernobyl problem”.
Today
The Chernobyl nuclear power plant recorded a 50-fold increase in the background where the occupation villages were located during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The occupiers dug trenches in the red forest area in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Abnormally high levels of radiation background are recorded there. Subsequently, radiation deaths were recorded.
