UN health officials say it is important that they have immediate access to Mariupol and other settlements most affected by the fighting in eastern Ukraine. They say they have received reports that almost all medical facilities and hospitals in areas such as Luhansk Oblast have been damaged or destroyed.
WHO calls for access to affected areas to assess health needs and provide important medical care to the sick and injured. Speaking in Lviv, WHO spokesman Bhan Bhatnagar said that the WHO has not yet been able to get to Mariupol and is unaware of the state of health of the besieged population.
For the past two months, Mariupol has been under constant bombardment and shelling by Russian troops. The city is razed to the ground. Tens of thousands of people are reported to be living in underground bunkers with limited food, water and medicine.
