This is the first time that the United Kingdom has confirmed the death of its citizen during Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not officially identify anyone and did not specify the circumstances under which the citizens found themselves on the territory of Ukraine. However, a ministry spokesman said the UK was supporting both of their families, adding that authorities were “urgently seeking additional information” about the missing Briton.
According to a number of media outlets, the deceased was a former British soldier Scott Sibley, who served in the Royal Logistics Corps and volunteered for Ukraine. The BBC, citing unnamed diplomatic sources, suggests that Sibley, 36, and the missing man may have fought on the side of Ukrainian forces in Mariupol or Donbas.
In particular, several posts about Sibli appeared on Twitter and Facebook. Thus, Ukrainian journalist Ilya Ponomarenko published a post in which Sibley was dressed in a military uniform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and thanked him for his service.
There is also a post on the GoFundMe fundraising platform dedicated to Sibley’s funeral. It said that the Briton died on April 23.
