The operation to transplant a kidney to a child from a deceased person was performed by doctors of the Shalimov National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology.
A three-year-old girl became the patient. This summer she developed acute renal failure. In recent months, the child’s condition has worsened. She was often put on hemodialysis, which is dangerous at such an early age.
The donor was a 38-year-old man. He died of a head injury in one of the capital’s hospitals. His sister and mother agreed to donate.
The heart of the deceased was received by a 34-year-old man from the Heart Institute in Kiev, and the liver and kidneys were received by the patients of the Shalimov Institute.
The surgeons removed all the infected areas of the girl’s kidneys, and the transplanted organ worked right in the operating room.
