“We have made it clear that we will never support” the expansion of European Union sanctions against Russia in the energy sector, Hungarian Cabinet Minister Gergel Gulyas told HirTV on Sunday.
Details
The EU is going to propose to ban Russian oil by the end of the year due to the war in Ukraine, and before that restrictions on imports will be introduced gradually, Bloomberg reported on Saturday, citing sources familiar with the issue.
Hungary, which is heavily dependent on Russian energy, has been one of the most active opponents of expanding sanctions.
“As such decisions require unanimity, the European Commission does not make sense to propose sanctions on natural gas and crude oil, which would limit Hungary’s purchases,” Gulyash said, citing the EU executive.
Addition
Orban’s government agreed with Russia to convert their gas payments into rubles, which was a test of EU sanctions policy. Russia on Wednesday cut off gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria, threatening to cut off gas supplies if payments are not made in rubles.
