Leaders of Pacific island nations will be invited to the White House later this year, said Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell. His remarks at a US-New Zealand business summit came amid growing concerns about the security implications of China’s presence in the region.
In particular, we are talking about the agreement concluded last month between China and the Solomon Islands.
He told the summit that the United States intends not only to receive island leaders, but also to increase diplomatic relations with Pacific countries that have not seen ambassadors for decades.
“For the United States to be effective in the Pacific, we need to do more, and we need to do more in areas that matter and are relevant to the people of the Pacific,” Campbell said.
He stressed that the Biden administration will also work with the United States Agency for International Development and the new United States International Finance Corporation to fund projects in the region and to rebuild the Peace Corps in most of the territory.
