“On Monday, the Spanish government said that the phones of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles were” infected “with the Pegasus spy program, and that this information was sent to the courts,” the newspaper said.
The Minister of Territorial Policy and Spokeswoman of the Spanish Government Isabelle Rodriguez and the Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers Felix Bolaños convened a press conference on this occasion. Bolaños called for “completed interventions”, during which “a certain amount of data was removed from the terminals”, and called these interventions “illegal” and “external”.
The executive is currently analyzing the mobile phones of all members of the executive branch, a study that Bolaños says has not yet been completed. “When we talk about external interference, we mean that they are alien to state bodies and do not have a judicial sanction from any official body. That is why we classify them as illegal and external. So far, we have not finished inspecting the government terminals in general, “the presidency minister said.
Bolaños quoted two technical reports from the National Center for Cryptology, according to which in May 2021 there were two interventions in the mobile phone of the Prime Minister, and in June 2021 – in the mobile phone of the Minister of Defense. There is no evidence that other interventions have taken place.
Spyware scandal
The use of the spy program of the Israeli developer NSO Group by the intelligence services of different countries became known last July 18, when the results of the journalistic investigation “Project Pegasus”, which lasted several months, were published. Journalists and human rights activists have a list of 50,000 telephone numbers – potential targets for surveillance – from several dozen countries.
According to the authors of the investigation , the authorities of authoritarian states could monitor hundreds of human rights activists, journalists and politicians for years using this program. High-ranking politicians, lawyers, journalists and human rights activists from France, the United States, India, Morocco, Mexico, Hungary and other countries were among the likely targets.
