On the eve
Secretary of the National Security Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov said on the telethon that Hungary was aware of the attack on Ukraine.
“Hungary openly declares its cooperation with the Russian Federation. Moreover, it was warned in advance that there would be attacks on our country. You have seen its position,” he said the day before.
According to Danilov, Hungary had plans for part of Ukraine.
Budapest’s reaction
Hungarian Secretary of State for International Relations Zoltan Kovacs called the reports fake news and said the allegations were in response to Hungary’s ongoing policy of refusing to provide weapons to Ukraine.
“On April 3, the Hungarians decided that Hungary would not supply weapons to Ukraine. Although we understand that Ukraine does not welcome our decision, spreading fake news and fabricating lies will not change our position,” he wrote on Twitter.
Let’s add
Relations between Ukraine and Hungary were strained before the war and became even more difficult after the Russian invasion.
Although Hungary has supported all EU sanctions packages imposed on Russia so far, it has initially opposed Hungary’s sanctions against energy imports.
According to media reports, Budapest has now softened its stance, and the EU is expected to impose an embargo on Russian oil tomorrow.
