He said the global response would be important in Beijing and its “actions in the Asian region.”
“If the international community in any way ignores or condones Russia’s actions in Ukraine, it may give the wrong signal that such policies may be tolerated in other parts of the world, including the Indo-Pacific region,” he said.
The publication notes that Tokyo, which has historically avoided involvement in conflicts outside Asia, has joined US and EU sanctions against Russia, and Japan has provided drones, bulletproof vests and humanitarian aid to Ukrainians. Kisi said that “all possible support for Ukraine will continue.”
Asked why Japan did not take the same tough stance on Russia in 2014 over Crimea, Kisi said the world had “changed since the annexation”.
“Last time, the reaction of the international community was not as united as this time,” he said.
The Washington Post writes that “American officials feared that growing ties between Russia and China could weaken efforts to boost Russia’s economic and military spending.” But they acknowledge that until Beijing helped Russia, neither militarily nor economically.
“Currently, we do not see significant support for Russia’s military action from China,” Blinken told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last month.
