Against the background of the ongoing war against the Ukrainian people, one can see how “Sovietization” is intensifying in Russia itself – the propaganda of nostalgia for the USSR. Derivatives of it are red flags at every step, St. George’s ribbons and more. The racists do not shy away from imposing criminal symbols on the temporarily occupied Ukrainian lands.

“Let’s start with the symbols. In fact, it seems to me to be a serious disease of the brain and consciousness, because it cannot be said that it is a logically structured symbolism within the Soviet Union. We see a wide eclecticism when, on the one hand, people wear crosses and say they are believers, and they are nostalgic for the Soviet Union. And we know that during the Soviet era, priests were shot and churches blown up. How does it all come together? ”The political scientist asks, adding that we see the Russian tricolor adjacent to the red flag, and the Latin letters“ Z ”and“ V ”gaining mass popularity.
According to the political scientist, this indicates a large-scale disease of society and the fact that the Russian government is manipulating the components of propaganda in its own way. However, she notes, at some point all this will collapse. The expert gives an example: “sacred” once and for Russians, May 9 – Victory Day – is now meaningless. Russia itself is turning this date into something comical, absurd, even humiliating for the Russians themselves. Yes, first Russia privatized the holiday of victory, then turned it into a sacrificial holiday – when they began to hold marches with portraits of grandfathers and great-grandfathers who fought. Now the Russians can come up with portraits of those who died in Ukraine – portraits of the grandchildren of those grandfathers who died in the war.
“This is such an absurdization of everything that can be so leveled on May 9, it is possible to level the memory that had some significance, and to cross it out and reduce it to the plinth, so that any symbolism will no longer matter. This is where the Russian Federation is heading, “she said.
At the same time, Yakhno adds that the attempt of the racists to use Soviet symbols in the occupation of Ukrainian territories remains a fact. Although they use it absurdly, and “special operation” – lose. ” Speaking about the possibility of using Soviet propaganda for so-called “referendums” in the temporarily occupied territories on their further “accession” to Russia, the political scientist said that he did not believe in the effectiveness of such an action. “Novorossiya did not come out (in 2014 – ed.), Everyone remembers it, and no conclusions were made in Russia, and for some reason they thought that it was possible to capture another part of the East and South in this way. But the scenario of holding all these pseudo-referendums is not working. Of course, Russia can hold this pseudo-referendum, but they will not have any real significance for public opinion, for the population, for Ukraine and even more so for the world. “
According to the expert, today the political component is no longer important. “After a full-scale invasion, the bombing of Russian-speaking regions – East and South – no political component is working. I think everyone has finally understood this… The whole plane of the struggle is in the military component, ”says Yakhno.
She is convinced that the myth of Russian liberators works only for the Russian audience and only because of the complete monopoly of power on information in Russia.
It will be a long time before Russian society is healed.
“Because it’s not just Putin’s disease, it’s a collective disease, when we managed to use the slavish mentality formed in view of their history with stench, slaves and serfs. And the Russian government has managed to successfully manipulate this, and as a result we have a collective Putin, crazy about the letters “Z” and “V”. Therefore, this whole mixture of symbols is absolutely absurd and savage. This is the subject of future study of the disease of Russia itself and its society, “said the political scientist.
Yakhno notes that different countries have experienced different periods of history, including totalitarianism and criminal regimes, but these countries give a clear assessment of their past, ie call black – black and white – white. However, Russia did not do that. Therefore, the expert believes that the treatment of Russian society will take a long time, even if we assume a change in political regime – the painful changes are rooted too deeply. One of the main stereotypes that helps to root the disease is the myth of some election of the Russian people, the myth of their right to point out to others. In addition, Russians are not ready to answer who they are. And it will be possible to cure society only when they can answer this question.
“Unlike all the former republics, which immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union began to answer this question and tried to strengthen their own identity, Russia did everything to stop the process of identity of other countries and not answer the question of their own identity – who they are.” – added Yakhno.
