In imposing sanctions on Russia over its war against Ukraine, the European Union must be prepared to maintain these restrictions for years. This was stated to journalists on Monday by German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbok, quoted by DW .
According to Burbock, the complete abandonment of Russian oil is a difficult step for the EU, because there are countries that are heavily dependent on energy from Russia.

“When we take this step, it must be prepared in the best way, because it must be able to withstand. We approve sanctions packages, which, depending on the circumstances, will have to be maintained for years,” said Burbock.
Details
The German Foreign Minister added that measures to abandon Russian energy should be prepared so that they do not have insurmountable consequences.
At the same time, Burbock did not want to discuss in detail Hungary’s blockade of the embargo on Russian oil. According to her, “there are issues that still need to be resolved.” She acknowledged that it would not happen the same day, but added that “in the coming days we will achieve a common result, here I am very confident.”
Other questions
Burbock also expects that at a meeting on May 16, EU ministers will agree to allocate an additional 500 million euros for the purchase of weapons for the Armed Forces. “Ukraine should continue to be supported, especially militarily,” she said.
Thus, the total amount of money allocated by the European Union for weapons for Kyiv will reach two billion euros. According to the minister, Germany is not going to ask for compensation for the supply of weapons to Ukraine from these funds, because there are countries for which it is more important. As indicated, the final approval of additional funds is expected a few days later.
Asked if she supported Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova’s EU candidate status, Burbock said: “The issue of European identity and European coexistence is critical. We see it right now, because Ukraine is also defending the European peace order.” .
