Ukraine Gate- Kyiv – May 18, 2022- Gita Gopinat, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, called on Western countries to increase financial aid to Ukraine.
The important point, Gobinat said, is to deliver the funds as quickly as possible to Ukraine, and as far as possible through grant funding.
As payments to Ukraine have been relatively small, new financing is urgently needed to support the economy and prevent macroeconomic disruption.
The global community is also very interested in how this funding will be made available, but in terms of actual payments, the numbers are small at the moment, but actual payments to Ukraine were only $3.3 billion in March and $1.6 billion in April.
Gubinat noted that it is too early to express any opinion on the idea of expropriating the foreign exchange reserves of the Russian Central Bank, but this is something that the International Monetary Fund will discuss in internal meetings.
“We are discussing any policy that could have repercussions on the international monetary system,” she said.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Allen on Tuesday also called on European leaders to increase financial aid to Ukraine amid Russia’s aggression.
