Bentley Motors will move to carbon neutral production by 2030 as part of Bentley’s Beyond100 strategy.
The innovative Green D + fuel is a non-fossil diesel alternative made from hydrogenated waste vegetable oil.
Bentley Motors announces that it is moving to the next phase of its plan to lead the way in sustainable luxury mobility.
Bentley will be the first manufacturer to use exclusively renewable fuels for all logistics operations. For this purpose, a refueling facility with hydrogenated vegetable oil fuel was installed in Crewe.
The sustainability of the developed supply chain will form the basis of Bentley’s industry-leading green manufacturing concept. Under this approach, all logistics operations at the Bentley plant will be carried out using renewable fuels or electricity.
The plant installed a pump and a 34,000 liter tank to refuel 10 HGV trucks with hydrogenated vegetable oil Green D +, which transport parts daily between Bentley’s Crewe plant and warehouse in Winsford, and to refuel 20 security vehicles and delivery vans.
The more than 250 forklifts and towing winches operating inside the plant are already powered by renewable electricity, a substantial portion of which comes from the 30,000 solar panels installed at the plant.
Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil is a second generation premium biofuel made from recyclable fats, vegetables, oils and other renewable and sustainable resources. Switching from conventional fuels to environmentally friendly fuels reduces CO2 emissions by 86%, nitrogen oxides by 30% and particulate matter by 80%. Vehicles used at the Bentley plant can run on Green D + fuel without changing design, maintenance or operation, so changing fuel appears to be a quick and effective way to improve air quality around the plant.
Bentley experts estimate the monthly biofuel consumption for local vehicle operation at 10,000 liters. If we take into account the 86% reduction in CO2 emissions and the annual mileage of almost 300,000 miles of factory vehicles, then 250,000 of them will now be covered without emissions.
“Earlier this month, we introduced the Beyond100 strategy. Its goal is to be carbon neutral by 2030,” says Peter Bosch, Board Member responsible for operations. “Through this strategy, we plan to show the direction of the luxury car segment and become pioneers on the path to complete environmental friendliness in all aspects of our work.
We are now implementing a strategic plan that will have a positive impact on the environment by preventing, reducing and compensating for harmful emissions, as well as using the principles of a zero waste economy. Converting all factory vehicles to fully renewable fuels is a great example of how these principles are put into practice.
We were the first to install new hydrogenated vegetable oil refueling equipment in a plant of this size, which complements our existing strategy of solar panels and renewable electricity generation. In addition, this is an example of a quick project implementation with minimal investment: it took us only six months.
