Ukraine Gate- Kyiv – May 18, 2022- The country’s largest wheat importer has warned that Yemen is facing food availability and global supply chain problems on an unprecedented scale, after the brutal Russian armed aggression on Ukraine is likely to cause a famine in Yemen.
International leaders have been urged ahead of a summit on global food security to be held in New York on May 18, calling for concrete policy proposals to prevent catastrophe.
Urgent international action is needed to prevent widespread famine in Yemen on an unprecedented scale due to the Russian war against Ukraine.
The United Nations estimates that more than 17.4 million people in Yemen suffer from food shortages, and 1.6 million face “extreme hunger” in the coming months.
About a third of the country buys wheat in Ukraine and Russia, however, high global prices and turbulent markets coupled with major disruptions in supplies have led to a rapid decline in the country’s food stocks.
The company also expressed particular concern that recent restrictions on Indian wheat exports could push Yemen’s food security crisis “to the point of no return”.
The White House is also working with Congress on the possibility of approving a package of responses to threats to global food security, which would provide $11 billion over the next three years.
