Ukraine Gate- Kyiv – May 18, 2022- Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the UK supports the creation of an international criminal court to try Putin and other Russians for their involvement in war crimes during the invasion of Ukraine.
“I discussed the idea of creating a court with the Ukrainian government, and we are open to the idea of a court, and we are studying it now, but we want the most effective way to prosecute those who have committed these horrific war crimes, including rape, sexual violence and indiscriminate attacks on civilians, and if the court helps to do so, The UK is certainly considering supporting it.”
The British government is also well aware that Putin and everyone behind the horrific war crimes committed in Ukraine must be brought to justice.
“We work very closely with the International Criminal Court, and we have sent support to Ukraine to help collect evidence, from witness testimonies to video evidence.
The creation of a special tribunal to punish the crime of aggression against Ukraine was announced on 4 March, similar to the 1942 London Declaration, which laid the foundation for the Nuremberg Tribunal.
The text of the “Call for a Special Court to Punish the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine” and the draft declaration prepared by the Working Group were approved by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and signed by dozens of prominent international and Ukrainian lawyers and former judges of international courts.
At the request of 39 countries, the International Criminal Court announced in early March the launch of an investigation into the war crimes that followed the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The United Nations International Court of Justice in The Hague also began hearings on the case against Russia in the genocide case brought by Ukraine on March 7.
