Shoigu said that civilians had been evacuated from the Azovstal plant.

“177 people were rescued, including 85 women and 47 children. All of them received qualified medical and psychological assistance,” he said.
Shoigu also said that the defenders of Mariupol blocked at the plant began to “surrender.”
“At the moment, 1,208 people have taken up arms. Let me remind you that 1,387 Marines have taken up arms there before,” the minister said.

The British Ministry of Defense reported that about 1,700 Ukrainian servicemen left the Azovstal plant in Mariupol .
In the evening of May 19, Deputy Commander of the Azov Regiment Svyatoslav Kalyna Palamar recorded a video message from Azovstal. He said that a special operation was underway at the plant.
