Ukraine Gate- Kyiv – May 21, 2022 – The first lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska said in a national air interview, commenting on the topic of mental health, that the war has an irreparable impact on the mental health of Ukrainians, so the health care system must now prepare to provide assistance, and a major project is currently underway, the National Health Program Psychological of Ukrainians in Ukraine.
And the first lady said, “Now I’m starting a big project in this regard – the National Mental Health Program for Ukrainians in general, because we don’t want to lie, we don’t want to talk about the dire consequences of war, but we are all psychologically stressed, almost every one of us has psychological problems during and after the war” .
She noted that certain groups of the population are most affected by children, the elderly, people who have lost loved ones, and homes, in addition, they are military personnel returning from war and often suffer from PTSD.
The first lady also said, “If we don’t do something universal in the mental health system now, and should have started yesterday, we could have dire consequences not only immediately after the war, but maybe 10 years from now, all these bad consequences lie ahead if we do nothing.” Now, that’s why we’ve done a lot of work in this regard.
Currently, Ukraine has the support of the World Health Organization, and receives expertise and protocols from the United States that work with military trauma.
Olena Zelenska also emphasized the need to review the current system of psychological care in order to understand the critical points that specialists should focus on.
