Mariupol is on the verge of epidemic and environmental disasters. The consequences for the environment will be felt for years not only in Ukraine but also abroad. This was announced by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova .
Details
It is noted that during almost three months of capture and occupation of the city, residents buried relatives and neighbors killed by the racists in the yards near houses located near the communications of water supply and sewerage. The graves are mostly not very deep – almost on the surface.
After the damaged water supply systems were launched, water spilled on the surface of the earth and began to erode natural burials.
As a result, there was a high risk of cadaveric venom, bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other pathogens that could be found in the deceased, in the water supply system, underground springs and rivers with the sea.
Due to the fact that the filtration systems and pumping stations for pumping sewage are also damaged by the occupiers, drinking water mixes with sewage and becomes unfit for consumption.
In addition, the Russian invaders turned the city into a garbage dump, because household garbage has not been removed for two months, it began to be thrown away near houses.
Some of the garbage is flooded with water from damaged water pipes and rain, which leads to the growth of pathogenic bacteria, which then enter groundwater, rivers and the sea.
Also, due to exploded rockets and air bombs, soils, groundwater in the city are contaminated with chemicals and heavy metals, which leads to dangerous for humans and the environment accumulation of carcinogenic waste.
This threatens mass poisoning and an epidemic of infectious diseases for Mariupol residents, and the consequences for the environment will be felt for years not only in Ukraine but also abroad, the ombudsman said.
The occupiers’ actions violate the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their additional protocols (including Protocol No. 1 of 1977) and are genocide of the Ukrainian people under Article 6 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

“I call on the UN Commission to Investigate Human Rights Violations during Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine to take into account these facts of genocide and human rights violations in Ukraine,” Denisova said.
