Senegal, a country of about 16 million people, has gas reserves of billions of cubic meters and is expected to become the largest gas producer in the region.
Berlin seeks to reduce its significant dependence on Russian gas after the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
Scholz said his country had already begun talks with Senegal on gas and liquefied natural gas production. Prior to his arrival, a representative of the German government said that Germany could help in exploring the gas field in Senegal.
Berlin has invited both Senegal, which currently holds the presidency of the African Union, and South Africa to attend the G7 summit in Germany in June. Both countries abstained during the vote on the UN resolution against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking as president of the African Union, Sall said many African countries did not want to side with anyone in the war.
