Technicians linked to the Syrian army’s barrel bombs, which have destroyed most of the country, have been sent to Russia to help potentially prepare for a similar campaign in the Ukrainian war, European officials say.
Intelligence officials say more than 50 specialists, all with extensive experience in making and delivering raw explosives, have been in Russia for several weeks, working with officials from Vladimir Putin’s army.
Their arrival is believed to be one of the factors behind US and European warnings that the Russian military may be preparing to use chemical weapons in the war against Ukraine.
Officials estimate that between 800 and 1,000 Syrian troops have now voluntarily traveled to Russia, where the Kremlin has promised them a salary of $ 1,500 to $ 4,000, 20 times the amount they would have received in Syria, where the economic collapse has devastated the country.
