Ukraine Gate- Kyiv – May 26, 2022 – According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, more than 80,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in the Czech capital, Prague, including 35,000 women aged 18-64 and 28,000 children and adolescents under 18.
According to Jan Januszic, who specializes in the integration of foreigners in Prague, the city has not had much experience supporting refugees, as it has always been the responsibility of the national government.
Since there are 57 city districts in Prague with their political leaders, organizations and budget, the city is working on forming a coordination group to advise and give some help to the municipalities and find a way for all the municipalities to work together.
They are also learning how to inform refugees of their rights and where to go for help. The city also plans to reach refugees through social media, rather than waiting for them to connect with the city. The city government is also planning to offer financial incentives to those who provide support to refugees.
Prague with a population of 1.2 million people before the Ukrainian refugee crisis had received about 240,000 immigrants, or 20% of the city’s population were of immigrant origin, about 67,000 of these immigrants were Ukrainians who lived in the city voluntarily, not because of the need to escape from the war .
The number of refugees from Ukraine who were forced to leave their homes and go abroad as a result of the Russian invasion has reached more than 6.5 million.
