The United States is initiating a vote in the coming days on a UN resolution that will tighten sanctions against North Korea by resuming intercontinental ballistic missile launches.
Details
According to Reuters, citing a US representative, the vote will take place, although China and Russia have expressed their disagreement.
The announcement of the vote on the upcoming project comes amid North Korea’s release of three missiles on Wednesday, including one considered its largest intercontinental ballistic missile, after US President Joe Biden completed a trip to Asia.
A U.S. official told reporters that the project “will further limit North Korea’s ability to promote its illegal WMD (weapons of mass destruction) and ballistic missile programs, simplify sanctions, and make it even easier to deliver humanitarian aid to those who need it.”
The draft resolution, cited by Reuters, includes extending the ban on the launch of ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as “any other system capable of delivering nuclear weapons.”
