Russia was unable to properly use its airborne troops in Ukraine, resulting in significant losses in many elite units of these forces. This was reported by the British Defense Ministry .

As noted, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has attracted its airborne troops (VAT), but tactfully miscalculated. These include an attempt to attack Kyiv via the Gostomel airfield in March, slowing down the offensive in the Izium direction since April, and the recent crossing of the Seversky Donets River.
According to Russian doctrine, VAT is used in the most complex transactions. About 45,000 people in these forces are mostly professional contractors. They have elite status and receive additional payment.
However, in Ukraine, Russia used paratroopers in missions that were better suited for heavy armored infantry, so elite units suffered significant losses. Such results of the paratroopers indicate a strategically incorrect management of this potential and Russia’s inability to guarantee an advantage in the air.
“The misuse of VAT in Ukraine shows that Putin’s significant investments in the armed forces over the past 15 years have led to an imbalance in the overall strength. The inability to anticipate the resistance of Ukrainians and the further complacency of Russian commanders have led to significant losses in many elite units of Russia, “the statement said.
