Melnyk noted that Ukrainians hoped to hear in this speech what concrete steps the German ruling coalition would take to win this war, but said that the speech did not live up to expectations.
“Unfortunately, this was a report that cannot be discussed, especially regarding the immediate supply of heavy weapons from Germany to suppress Russia’s massive offensive in the Donbas. In military terms, Ukraine is simply let down by Berlin,” the ambassador said.
According to Melnyk, the “mega-important” topic of EU candidates “did not send any encouraging signals to Ukrainians.”

On May 26, Scholz addressed the World Economic Summit in Davos. He was expected to respond to Ukraine’s request to increase support, but the chancellor said he was convinced that “Putin will not win the war”, in particular because of “the impressive opposition of the Ukrainian army and population.”
