The World Health Organization says that smallpox poses a moderate risk to general public health globally, given that cases have been reported in countries where the disease is not common.

“The risk to public health can be high if the virus is used to establish itself as a human causative agent and to spread to groups at higher risk of serious diseases, such as young children and people with weakened immune systems,” the WHO said.

According to the agency, the sudden appearance of smallpox in several non-endemic countries indicates an undetected transmission over time and recent events are intensifying. The WHO expects to report more cases as supervision in endemic and non-endemic countries expands.

As of May 26, a total of 257 laboratory-confirmed cases and approximately 120 suspected cases of monkeypox were reported in 23 countries. No fatalities were reported.
According to the forecast of the Chief State Sanitary Doctor Igor Kuzin, cases of monkeypox will be registered in Ukraine, but there will be no outbreak .
