Borrel hopes for EU agreement on oil ban with Russia “this afternoon”

European Union members are to agree on the next package of sanctions against Russia, including restrictions on Russian oil imports, in talks currently under way with officials, the bloc’s foreign minister, Josep Borrell .

“We have to make a unanimous decision. Negotiations took place yesterday afternoon, and they will take place this morning and during the day,” Josep Borrell told France Info.

“I think this afternoon we will be able to offer an agreement to the leaders of the member states,” he added.

Asked whether plans to include a ban on Russian oil imports could fail because of resistance from Hungary and other Eastern European nations, Borrel said: “No, I don’t think so – in the end, an agreement will be reached.”

According to media reports, the EU Council in the draft outcome of the summit indicates that the sixth package of sanctions against Russia will apply to oil, as well as petroleum products supplied from Russia to member states, with the temporary exception of oil supplied by pipeline.
