Quote
“Gazprom has completely suspended gas supplies to GasTerra BV (Netherlands) due to non-payment in rubles,” Gazprom said in a statement on May 31.
Details
As stated, at the end of the working day on May 30, Gazprom Export “did not receive payment for gas supplies in April from GasTerra BV” in accordance with Putin’s decree.
Addition
After the EU imposed sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has demanded payment in rubles for gas supplies since April 1. But the bloc told member states that the Kremlin’s proposed mechanism, which requires the opening of euro and ruble accounts with Gazprombank under Russian control, would violate sanctions. Subsequently, the EU clarified how not to violate sanctions when paying.
On April 27, Gazprom announced the cessation of gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland, which refused to pay in rubles. On May 21, Gazprom completely cut off Finnish gas for the same reason.
The EU called Gazprom’s statement on the cessation of supplies another attempt at gas blackmail by Russia.
