According to UNICEF, almost 100 days of war in Ukraine have had devastating consequences for children at a scale and pace not seen since World War II.
“Three million children in Ukraine and more than 2.2 million children in refugee-receiving countries are now in need of humanitarian assistance. Almost two out of three children have been displaced by the fighting,” UNICEF said.
UNICEF also emphasizes that the war has caused a severe crisis in the field of child protection. Children fleeing violence face a significant risk of being separated from their families, abused, abused, sexually exploited and trafficked. Most of them experienced extremely traumatic events. These children urgently need security, stability, child protection assistance and psychosocial support – especially those who are unaccompanied or separated from their families. What they need most in life is peace.
At the same time, war and mass displacement are destroying sources of income and economic opportunities, leaving many families without sufficient income to meet their basic needs and unable to provide adequate support for their children.
UNICEF calls for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and protection of all children from danger. This includes ending the use of explosive weapons in human settlements and attacks on civilian infrastructure. UNICEF calls for full humanitarian access to reach children in need safely and quickly wherever they are.
In Ukraine, UNICEF and partners have delivered vital medicines and medicines to nearly 2.1 million people in war-affected areas; provide access to safe water for more than 2.1 million people in areas where networks have been damaged or destroyed; provided mental and psychosocial support to more than 610,000 children and their parents and guardians; almost 290,000 children provided school supplies.
