After months of silence, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed solidarity with Ukraine and called the “barbaric” war launched by Russia.
Details
Merkel said she would not give advice from the side, but wished the Ukrainian government to find an end to “this barbaric war”, one of the participants in the farewell ceremony with the president of the Confederation of German Trade Unions DGB, where she spoke, told Reuters.
Earlier, actor Ulrich Mattes, who is a friend of Merkel, told Stern magazine that the war worries her, but she does not want to intervene.
“I suspect she doesn’t want to be a kind of second chancellor,” he said.
Some other German politicians, including former Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, acknowledged that the policy of reconciliation with Russia may have been “too optimistic.”
Context
Merkel’s policies have drawn criticism from the United States and other countries for supporting the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, which is designed to deliver Russian gas directly to Germany. The former chancellor also stressed the need to continue talks with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin even after Russia temporarily occupied Crimea and Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Following the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Merkel issued a statement stressing that there was no excuse for blatant violations of international law. Months of her silence on the situation in Ukraine have caused outrage.
Before
German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock called on EU countries to continue to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia.
