Lviv City Council has announced an all-Ukrainian competition to build a memorial to Ukrainian soldiers on the site of the Monument of Glory in Lviv. The elements of the monument must be dismantled within three months. This decision was made by the Executive Committee of the Lviv City Council during a meeting.
According to the decision of the executive committee, the city council announced an architectural competition for the best project to equip the territory of the Monument of Glory to create a memorial to honor the Ukrainian soldier. The decision also calls for the establishment of a working group to work out steps to build a new memorial in the area.
The Halych District Administration is to inspect and dismantle the Monument of Glory by February 28, 2021.
In March, 2019 in Lviv demolished one of elements of the Monument of Glory – a 30-meter stele. Bas-reliefs from the stele are kept in the Lviv Museum “Territory of Terror”.
The Memorial to the Military Glory of the Soviet Armed Forces was unveiled in 1970. The ensemble of the memorial consisted of a 30-meter stele, a concrete composition with figures of soldiers and allegorical figures of a Soviet soldier and the “Motherland”.
