Japanese and NATO officials have agreed to step up military cooperation and joint exercises over Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which threatens the security of Europe and Asia.

“Representatives of Japan and NATO agreed on Tuesday to intensify military cooperation and joint exercises, as they share fears that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will worsen the security situation in Europe and Asia,” the statement said.

Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said at the beginning of a meeting with NATO Military Committee Chairman Rob Bauer that Japan hopes to strengthen ties with European countries and supports expanding NATO’s involvement in the Indo-Pacific region.
“The security of Europe and Asia is closely intertwined, especially at a time when the international community is facing serious challenges,” Kishi said.
Bauer’s visit to Tokyo came amid NATO’s naval exercises in the Mediterranean, in which Japan’s Naval Self-Defense Forces are participating.
