The United States must restart production of HIMARS artillery systems and supply at least a dozen to Ukraine. This was stated by former commander of the US and NATO allies, General Wesley Clark in a comment to the Voice of America .
Quote
“Four systems handed over by the States are very few, much more. But they are not currently produced even in the United States. So, as with the Stingers and Javelins, the United States has to accelerate its production to urgently meet all shipment needs in Ukraine and at the same time have some reserves in stock. But these reserves are not limitless. HIMARS production was recently discontinued. Now it will probably be restarted, but it is not an instant process. I hope that we will be able to provide Ukraine with several dozen HIMARS missile systems. Maybe more, but four is just the beginning, ”said Clark.
He also noted that the HIMARS systems are extremely necessary for the Armed Forces to maintain their positions. After all, being on the defensive, the Ukrainian military is a fixed target for powerful Russian artillery.
“These high-range systems will allow Ukrainian forces to keep the enemy away from the line of contact and themselves out of range of Russian artillery. For example, the range of HIMARS exceeds the Russian tornadoes by several kilometers. Therefore, if you know where the tornado systems are located, you will put HIMARS a little further so that they can hit the Russian tornadoes, and the enemy will not be able to aim at you, ”the general explained.
The Voice of America notes that in the new US defense package, the Ukrainian command has high hopes for HIMARS volley fire missile systems. So far, 4 such installations have been identified.
“HIMARS can hit targets at a distance of up to 300 kilometers, but Ukraine has so far been provided with ammunition with a range of not more than 80 kilometers. They also called for not firing on enemy positions directly on the territory of the Russian Federation, ”the statement reads.
