Russia has increased the number of provocations in Syria this month. According to sources in The Wall Street Journal, some actions of Russian troops in Syria threaten a direct conflict between the US military and Russia .

It is noted that this month the Russians conducted a series of operations against the US-led coalition in Syria. In particular, air strikes were launched on the Al-Tanf garrison, near Syria’s border with Jordan in southeastern Syria, where US troops are conducting a mission to train and advise local fighters. The Russian Federation told the United States that it had carried out air strikes in response to an expected attack on Syrian government forces, which could have resulted in injuries and destruction of the vehicle.
Russian fighters, including two Su-35s and one Su-24, then flew over al-Tanf before striking the garrison battle post. The Al-Tanf garrison is home to 200 US troops.
The U.S. military was not near the base during the strikes, and there were no casualties. However, the operation marked what a US military official described this month as a “significant increase in provocations”.
This week, Russia dropped two Su-34 fighters at a raid in northeastern Syria to detain an Islamic State bomb maker. According to the US military, the fighters retreated after the United States raised its own F-16 fighters.
The head of US Central Command, Army General Eric Kurila, said that “Russia’s recent behavior has been provocative and escalating.”
The WSJ adds that Russia’s escalation in Syria threatens a direct conflict with the United States.
