Peter will become the first leftist leader of Colombia. He promised voters profound social and economic change.
Incumbent Colombian President Ivan Duque has already congratulated his future successor. Peter was also greeted by leaders of a number of foreign countries. The Cuban president called his victory “historic and nationwide.”
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has called Colombia a fraternal country, although relations with it were severed in 2019.
Peter also congratulated the President of Mexico. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called Peter’s victory “the end of the curse and the dawn” for the fraternal people.
Peter’s proposals, especially to ban new oil projects, have scared some investors, although he has promised to abide by current contracts. His victory is likely to cause unrest in the market until the composition of his cabinet is announced.
The 62-year-old Peter has twice run in the 2010 and 2018 presidential elections, but was unsuccessful.
According to CNN, in his youth, Peter became a member of the left-wing guerrilla movement “April 19 Movement” (M19), founded in protest of the 1970 election. In different years he served as a member of the House of Representatives (lower house of Congress) and senator. In 2012-2015 he was the mayor of Bogota. Peter plans to restore diplomatic relations with Venezuela and consider changes to the terms of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States.
